At the onset, I thought it would not be as interesting as the psychiatric ward but surprisingly it was. The day kicked off with me having breakfast with a woman named Lori, who had just been admitted the day prior for alcohol dependence.

I did not know so many alcohol dependents; not one as close as this. When I first saw her walk to the table, I mistook her to be a handicapped because she had a walker to assist her.

Further, she needed me to help her eat her breakfast to the extent of opening sugar packets for her coffee. She was shaking terribly when she attempted to put the sugar in her coffee but unfortunately, the sugar went all over her eggs and bacon.

To her rescue, I opened another packet of sugar and delicately mixed it with her coffee. Not intending to sound so intrusive, I asked her first and before I knew it, we were having a conversation already.

I never expected withdrawal symptoms could be that awful and damaging. Too much alcohol made her shake that much as if she were an epileptic or something. Seriously though, I felt ashamed at myself for directly assuming that she had a disability.

I have never seen someone in that condition. Imagine, not being able to walk because of withdrawals?! She began to cry and told me how much she missed drinking and sadly pondered that she was not going to make it. To somehow lessen her anxiety, I advised her that the first 48 hours are the most difficult in the duration of her recovery, and that she had only a day left to go through it.

For people like Lori, I believe that diverting her attention to something else would help her forget the withdrawal signs. So I shared encouraging words to her like how much I admired her for trying to change and improve her life.

It is also important for health care givers like me to show to chemical dependents that there is hope and assure them of our availability. Then I asked her if there was anything I could do to help her and to never hesitate asking me for assistance.

I told her I would be there until 2: At that instant I earned her trust. Chemical dependents are doubtful individuals. For the longest time that they are addicted to such mood and behavior-altering substances like alcohol, they cannot make decisions anymore.

They have lost their power of choice and continuously use the chemicals over and over again regardless of their efforts to quit and exercise of logical thinking and determination.

Most of alcoholics though experience denial wherein the dependent acknowledges that there is a problem but refused to accept that the alcohol abuse is the problem itself. After breakfast, we had a group therapy. It was a very emotional session. Lori broke down and the two other patients gathered around her and put their hands on her shoulders, offered her Kleenex and told her things would get better.

I hope I can get better. Lori seemed to be left alone and the mere sympathy shown by other patients and the health care workers mattered so much to her. After the group therapy, treatment planning followed where the patients discussed how they planned of staying sober.

There was one client who lives alone. The therapist emphasized that recovering patients who live alone are more prone to relapses and will fall again to the addiction of alcohol because they are lonely and feeling abandoned. He further advised that the client should seek a support group for at least the first six months of recovery in order to stay faithful to the rehabilitation.

After the treatment planning group, there was another group therapy session where we had to choose an Alcoholics Anonymous slogan and draw a picture to describe it. They are always looking for the greener grass on the other side of the fence. Because of discontentment, people get into trouble.

If we learn to appreciate what we have, this world will be a much happier place to live in.
